Panel heat calculator

Add up what the devices in a board give off, and check it against what the enclosure can shed — modules and watts, both budgets at once.

Updated August 2026

The enclosure Pick one or two boards. The permissible dissipation and the module count come from the enclosure data.

Board 1

Board 2 — optional

Boards built together

Adjacent boards warm each other, so the permissible dissipation is reduced by 10 %. The source for the 10 % has not been established.

Margins Three numbers decide how much of the board you are allowed to use. Each is easy to enter wrongly.

Between 0 and 1. Not everything draws current at once. 0 means no reduction and is treated as 1.0.

Between 0 and 0.9 — the fraction held back. 0.2 keeps 20 % free for later additions, in both budgets.

Between 0 and 0.5. Heat in the internal wiring, as a fraction. 0.1 adds 10 % — not 10.

Protective devices Everything on the DIN rail that is not a smart device. Quantity defaults to 1 and is always shown.
Smart devices Shelly Pro, and at the bottom of the list the discontinued IHC range.

Result Both budgets have to balance. A board can be thermally fine and still physically full.

What this tool is, and is not

It is a design aid for choosing an enclosure. It is not a verification to any standard, and it does not replace the enclosure manufacturer's documentation or the panel builder's responsibility for the finished board.

Ambient temperature is not accounted for. An enclosure's permissible dissipation falls as the room around it gets warmer, so a board in a warm utility room has less headroom than this calculation shows.

Where a figure is not published by the manufacturer, the result is an estimate.

The figures behind the calculation

Every enclosure and every device the picker offers, with the data-quality tier beside it. Nothing here is needed to use the tool — it is here so a single number can be checked without building a calculation around it.

The permissible dissipation and the reference temperature of the enclosures have not been sourced yet, and neither has the 10 % reduction for boards built together.
